Joaquin has had an extensive academic career in the Americas. He has taught Spanish language and literature at Puerto Rican universities as well as in twelve different USA universities, where he also taught Brazilian Portuguese. His academic career in the Americas include three years teaching Latin American history at the graduate level at an university in the south of Brazil, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul. He has also written many articles on topics of Latin American history and literature, as well as contributed to a book about that subject matter. In addition, he published in Brazil a book about the Brazilian novelist, Érico Veríssimo.
